This Podcast or article explores alternative ways to prove your English proficiency and academic ability for postgraduate and undergraduate studies in the UK.

Moving Away from Standardized Tests

The UK government is shifting its approach, with many universities now opting for alternative methods to assess your English language skills. Here are some ways you can demonstrate your English abilities:

  • Your Intermediate English Marks (Grades 11 & 12): Universities may accept your English marks from your higher secondary education (intermediate) for admission. The minimum acceptable mark can vary (often between 60-75%) and may depend on the university.

  • Medium of Instruction (MOI) Letter: If your higher secondary board isn't accepted by a particular university, you can provide a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from your undergraduate college. This letter confirms your bachelor's degree was taught in English.

When Standardized Tests Are Still Needed

While the trend is moving away from standardized tests, some universities may still require them in certain situations. Here's when you might still need IELTS/PTE/Duolingo or GRE/GMAT:

  • Specific University Requirements: Some universities may have their own admissions criteria and require these exams regardless of your background.

  • Unspecified Boards: If your higher secondary board isn't recognized by the university, you may need to take an English language test.
